The extract form of Acerola C is different from the whole berry itself. The extract form contains only organic substances and all the necessary minerals, antioxidants, polyphenols; trace minerals, and other vitamins that are found in the berry including vitamin A & E. All the inorganic compounds are then removed. Whereas the whole berry which is already ripe contains much lower content of nutrients and all inorganic substances are still intact. Extract are done using aqueous method, and not alcohol.
Uses of Acerola C
Natural healers use Acerola C extract to treat common cases of cough, cold, diarrhea and sore throat. Less common ailments such as tuberculosis, anemia and diabetes also was treated with Acerola C extract.
To date, some preliminary findings from laboratory research and animal-based studies indicate that Acerola C may have some beneficial effects on the following;
According to a 2006 study from Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, Acerola C may help reduce blood sugar levels. In tests on mice, scientists demonstrated that antioxidants extracted from Acerola C help suppress transport of blood sugar throughout the intestines.
In a laboratory study published in Plant Foods for Human Nutrition in 2011, researchers found that Acerola C extract may fight oxidative stress (an aging-related process linked to a number of major diseases).
Use in Cancer Treatment
According to researchers, Acerola C extract is used to prevent the onset of many age-related diseases. It exhibits many cytotoxic effects, leading some to believe it is useful in treating cancer. However, Acerola C extract’s benefits are not considered a replacement for prescription cancer treatments.
Acerola C extract acts as a free radical scavenger for the skin, as it contains mineral salts, which help return minerals to stressed areas of skin. Its mucilage and protein content also provide hydration to the skin.
The Acerola C Factor
Vitamin C is an essential dietary nutrient, playing a role in immune system health. It is also important in the synthesis of collagen, a structural component of bone, skin and blood vessels as well as the synthesis of brain chemicals involved in mood regulation.
Vitamin A is another important nutrient found in Acerola C, yielding as much as a bundle of full-sized carrots. Vitamin A plays a role in visual health, normal growth and ongoing development, red blood cell production and it protects the immune system.
Additional micronutrients found to a lesser degree in Acerola C include several B-vitamins, calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium. Each of which is necessary in a normal diet. Protein, fiber and fatty acids, important macronutrients of the diet, are also in the fruit.
